I knew I shouldn't have wasted time clicking on the link for that "it is not for jok..........." posting earlier today. I just noticed that a link was added to my IE Favorites list, pointing to that page. Apparently there was some JavaScript or something in the posting. Shouldn't the forum software have some protection against that sort of thing?

I didn't bother to click on it. I simply reported it.

Hi Kent,
I'm looking at the post in question right now and don't see any kind of code. We've blocked the ability to post HTML posts, and that includes javascript (I just verified this). I also opened the thread (had to in order to see it), and just verified there were no added favorites, however I do use Firefox. The only other thing we can do is block the ability to post links. I'm taking a shot in the dark here, but I am not sure that the community members would be thrilled with that prospect.
I can tell you, that as soon as we see a post that's inappropriate (i.e. spam), it's taken care of immediately. This is where the community members come into play. There's an icon at the top of every post, a red circle with a slash through it. If you click that, the moderators are sent a message about a questionable post.
I have my email set up so that I see blurbs whenever a new message comes in, if I see something that has to do with reporting a post, I will stop whatever it is I am doing and look into it and usually get a few messages from other moderators that I need to look into something if I haven't already. We do watch the forums and try to keep them free from spammers.
Thanks!

Actually, what I think happened is when you went to the site the link indicated, there was script on that page that inserted the bookmark, but not on the link itself.

The link was to the forum page, not to the Web site itself. I didn't actually click any links; I just opened the forum page to see what the message was.

Ahhh... Well, that would be different, then.
What browser are you using? I seem to recall some vague reference about some browser with particular spyware/adware that will pick up links on pages that are opened in it and bookmark them automatically....
I'll have to see if I can find anything on that again. It's been a while.

I just took a closer look at my Favorites list, and there were actually a couple of DOZEN links to forum threads in there. I'm running IE 6 with no special plug-ins or modifications ... there must be something about the forum software that's causing this.

I can't say. I'm running the same thing, but I have no links or favorites or shortcuts to the forum. I wonder if it might be a hand-off from your e-mail app that is making any link you click also added to your favorites....

Yes, come to think of it, I sometimes do. It's the Delete Message command in Eudora, but I sometimes hit it in IE by mistake, probably a carry-over from the years of reading the lists. Does Ctrl-D add links to the Favorites list?

CTRL-D does add to your favorites in IE, so this probally why you have all of the favorites added.
