Another website I frequent has a different setup then MIVA for tracking inventory. Inventory is not subtracted when an item is placed in the basket. It gets subtracted only when admin releases it from the interface, i.e. when an order is processed in admin.
Can this be done in MIVA? Perhaps as a module. Hint, developers!:D

While this sounds like a good idea, it's not. The problems occur when several shoppers purchase an item, then some have to be contacted with the information that it's no longer available. This can result in disgruntled customers, especially on low stock items.

However, if it's what you want to do, there's no module that "holds" it and provides an admin snapshot view for release, but you could just use an additional product field to modify the counts.

If you want to offer products when they would possibly be out of stock, I recommend using Inventory Manager (http://www.designextend.com/page/miva/PROD/BROK_INVENTORY)and setting up a level (so you can impose it on some products and perhaps not all) that if it goes out of stock it can still be purchased, and you can display a message like: "This item is low in stock. Verification of availability is made upon purchase."
