I know someone with a ZenCart ecommerce site. It's been an expensive pain for them, and their developer has disappeared. In trying to make changes themselves, they found that the online forums for zencart are not of much use.
It occurred to me that without these Miva boards and the folks who volunteer their time and expertise, like Vic and the other expert hosts and developers, Miva would feel like ZenCart and many of us would be unable to keep our sites working.
A public thanks to everyone who posts answers here.
best wishes,

I frequently have been asked, what about that "free" cart? And, have actually been tempted. But, as you have found out, it's been very expensive and frustrating for all the time wasted and probable money wasted. I've heard of many stories of sketchy "fly by night"PHP developers reeping/scamming deep rewards from their clients before the work is accomplished or finished. Just all too common -- evidence that Miva Merchant is one of the most viable/flexible solutions. Doesn't matter which version of MM.

If that makes any sense,

Scott

I can't speak to how easy or difficult it is to run a Zen Cart installation. I spent 5 minutes inside their admin and it looked fairly standard. Module-based architecture. Skins. They find it frustrating and limiting, but that may be due to lack of experience.
What I do know is their "developer" charged them nearly $30,000 for what looks like an out-of-the-box intallation with no obvious customizations, and now they have something they can't use well that garners no traffic. A real shame.

I've got a ZenCart "on the shelf" - I guess I'm jaded by how easy it is for me to make MIVA Merchant look the way I want it to. I'm also not fond of finding out about security updates weeks later.

And I agree the ZenCart forums tend to make you feel like you should already know how to do something - why are you bothering them.

At least here I feel comfortable asking almost any stupid question I can think of.
