I have at present about 1300 items and eventually there'll be over 2000 at least (balls of yarn, accessories etc.) I have learned to paginate, but of course that causes loading time problems unless kept to low numbers (8per,10per page etc). Can I insert numbers or letters and links so that my visitors can leap more quickly down the alphabet?. Thanks, Bernard:confused:

Take a look at how Pugster.com uses our Category Template Manager (http://www.sebenza.com/products/SS-CTGYTEMPLATES5.html?a_aid=forum) module for the pagination. They do something like this "1 2 3 ... 24 25"

Thanks Scott but I'm hoping to get some 'html' for my purpose for the time being. Modules may come later when I am better aquainted with MM5

You're not going to be able to do this with straight HTML unless you're actually coding all your pages in HTML itself (i.e. static pages).

Hmmm...okay Pamela, thanks. I certainly shall not be coding myself. Hopefully someone will come up with something to suit my situation.

The problem isn't going to be coming up with a method to show "page numbering" the problem is going to be getting your customers tom view more than two or three pages.

Customers, as a rule, will not page through more than three or four paginated categories screens.

You should focus your time on coming up with better category organization so each category has a max of 15/30 products.

Also, be sure that you collaspe products as much as possible into a single product with attributes. For example, if you have balls of yarn, obviously you might have color attributes (red, green, blue) but if what might not be obvious is to also include length, or yarn weight as an attibute of the same "product".

As long as customers feel they are headed in the right direction, they will follow your path.

Just be careful with putting too much into attributes. If you ever need to synch with QuickBooks or do inventory, the current attributes set up may not meed your needs. Keep an eye to the future.
For stores like this, I'd like to see a set of pull downs where the user can select from a number of attributes, hit submit and it does a search. Something like http://www.emporiumplus.com/go/wcw/PROD/1AAM5/1AA00058 only have it read the values from custom fields and have the users select from available sizes, colors, etc. Kind of a smarter search for customers who don't know all the values to enter. It could work if a custom field was validated. I know I could explain it better.....I sense a technical spec coming on....
