I'm not sure if this is some new service or something but a customer called because they're trying to use Google's "WebSite Webmaster Tools" as they put it and said Google was asking for their FTP username and password. Does anyone know if this is legit? Is Google offering some web authoring software or something like that?

Hi David,

The only thing I can think of is their Webmaster Centeral (http://www.google.com/webmasters/) page. Though not entirely sure what tool here would require you to give your FTP info.

Not quite sure, but could this have to do with the google sitemaps? I know google refers to that area as 'webmaster tools'. That area provides statistics in addition to the sitemaps. You do have to use FTP to place a 'marker' for google to recognize your site as yours.

Although, you shouldn't have to personally give them your FTP details...

Tim.

Ah, yeah he mentioned something about that, either a page or a meta tag, said they asked for his FTP info at that point, I said I wasn't sure but it sounded like a scam.
