We just installed a gift certificate manager in our Miva 5 but don't want to charge our customers shipping becuase the giftcertificates will be emailed, does anyone know a good module or way to use both price table shipping and weight based shipping within the same store?
Thanks:confused:

Use one of the built-in shipping modules, let's say "weight based" (if you don't use shipping by weight already with UPS, FedEx, etc), and assign 0.00 lbs weight to the gift certificates. Shipping 0.00 lbs item will therefore cost $0.00....
If you are using weight based shipping already, try one of the other modules - like flat shipping... give it a name like "Gift Certificate Orders ONLY" and a $0.00 shipping rate...

The best solution, especailly if you are using real time shipping modules like UPS, USPS or FedEx - is to incorporate CBS' Shipping SuperMod (http://tinyurl.com/ygjhvs). This way you could create a flat rate table with Free Shipping as an option with a $0 price and assign that only to the gift certificate product. Everything else will be charged according to weight and carrier specific service as usual.

Errr... that's a bit of overkill if you are already using weight based shipping options. If the gift cert has a weight of 0.00 lbs, UPS/FedEx/etc won't calculate a valid rate and therefore won't display any shipping options - automatically, without any other modules - and the built-in weight based shipping module will kick in on a product (or total order weight) of 0.00 lbs and display the $0.00 shipping option. If you combine the gift cert with other items, they will overall have a shipping weight and qualify for UPS/FedEx rates, while the gift cert won't increase the shipping rate, being a 0.00 lbs option. This problem really doesn't need a $100 module to be solved with the tools already built into MM.

Again, as I said - if they are using a real time method, my suggestion was the best solution.
If they are not, then the solution you suggested will work.

I don't see how that matters whatsoever. If you have a 0.00 lbs item you are checking out with, FedEx/UPS/etc will not return any valid shipping rates, but the built-in "shipping by weight" module will. If you are checking out with physical goods (that have weight) and add a gift cert to the mix, it won't increase the shipping rates at all. What does any of this have to do with "real time" shipping methods? It will simply work, without CBS or any other modules, on stock MM installation.
You do realize you can use the built-in "weight table based shipping" and create an entry for 0.00 lbs orders, right? It will only get triggered (and displayed) IF the order total weight is 0.00 lbs. Otherwise your other shipping options will kick in - whether real time (UPS/FedEx) or not. No modules required here, it will work out of the box on any MM version.

If you send an item with zero weight to a real time shipping module, you will get "Unable to caculate shipping" message every time.
Thats why.
If the customer orders only the gift certificate, this will cause a problem too.

Thank you all for your responses, but it really got away from my issue. I use Price Table Shipping and need weight based or flat rate just for this product. I don't have a carrier/weight based set up right now. I think (other than buying a new module) I will need to indicate to my customers that if they buy a $25 gift certificate - it will show as $22.05 and $2.95 shipping, but the actual value is $25, and really no shipping charges are incurred. Does anybody have another solution?

I use Price Table Shipping, not weight based.

FFP....Have you gotten a response to this, I'm in the EXACT same position.
This module by Emporium Plus (http://www.emporiumplus.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=wcw&Product_Code=1AA00008&Category_Code=1AAF) allows you to specify free shipping for a given product.
