View Full Version : Important: Your posts are on Google
I could not find a general folder that would allow me to post this....
Something every store owner here should know: if you include your store name or address in your posts here, it will most likely show up on Google.
That means if you do a search for your name/address in Google these posts will pop up. I did a search for a couple stores here and they showed up, which means your customers are getting a behind the scenes look...you may or may not mind this.....Personally I don't want this stuff popping up for my customers so I have remove my websites from my sig.
I thought everyone should know this

Anything posted on a web based board can and may show up in any search engine. This is nothing new.
In fact, it helps your page rank and your results. Why should you remove your sig?
Thanks Mr Vega for that tid-bit of information. Certainly some more than others... It took two days for my post to hit google when I search my url. Letting people like us non-techies know ahead of time would be helpfull.
The last thing I want my customers picking up, is cross-talk regarding my store software and back-end operation. The word is discretion
Perhaps this type of forum should have some private folders so store owners do not need to air there laundry for their customers.
I am not surprised that Miva and people like you selling services to us store owners, want to show up on Google but I would guess there are some store owners here like myself who would like some discretion when discussing issue with our storefront software and security.
It is a matter of personal preference and people should know about it so they can make the choice regarding there level of desired discretion.
I use another forum for my 3 CAD work. That forum is private so I can post a work in progress, for some help without google picking it up and posting my drawings for my competition or customers to see.

I don't see any reason to be paranoid. I've found some great sites and products in this forum through following signature links. In fact, I'm posting this just because you'd said I'd show up in Google by doing so....heck, I think I'll post a reply to every message.....wooo hahaha!!!!!! (Sorry, Halloween is getting to me.)
Good point Michael. If it is not an issue for you - then it is not an issue. It is for me and I suspect for some others here.
To clarify: I did not use the word paranoid but instead discretion. I am sure you already know that Websters defines these words quite differently :)
I would agree about the web tags. I enjoy following them myself. A more discrete method may be to simply put the information in your profile but not your sig. I have not tested that method however. Your sig could say "see my profile for my website" or something to that effect.
Great site BTW...........Conway NH my favorite climbing spot.
Happy Halloween!!

Michael, one other note: You also sell products and services to the types of people who frequent this forum. Nothing wrong with that.
That said, I can see how you would be happy at the exposure here and how having your posts on google would makes sense for you.
This is however quite different from a company that has a storefront and deals with retails customers. Image is everything, and missing that point means missing marketing 101. I don't want my demographic seeing me as a webmaster, "geek-ing it" out on a forum:) .

Maxer,
I see your point... One good way to get around this is to use Private Messages or Direct Email. These options prevent your trade secrets from being seen by the world.

Thanks Dan, good solution. I don't know enough about Google but another solution might be to put Web site click here (http://www.kemperstrategic.com/)in ones sig. Not sure if it would still pop up. The other option I mentioned was linking to your profile rather than putting it in your sig See my website in my profile (http://extranet.miva.com/forums/member.php?u=2027) not sure if that would be more discrete or not. If google is able to see profiles then it would not work.
Incidentally I am just down the road from you in Longmont......

Yeah, it will probably still show up.

Hey right on! I was just down in Longmont a week ago... took my daughter to the Pumpkin Patch, it was a lot of fun. Do you have any snow left? I was sitting on 2 feet last week. (this is probably one of those cases where I should have used a Private Message :) )

The snow melted already. Heck, it feels like 70 degs out there. PM me and let's do coffee next time you are in Boulder. I like Amante on North Broadway.... I like to see what you can do for us.
