Is is possible to save (copy) a set of directories to preserve the MIVA data?

That is, if my ISP based MIVA installation fails (for whatever reason), I would like to be able to restore the entered store data on a new install and be up and running. Is the MIVA data stored in a way that I can simply grab certain directories which could then be copied back into the new installation ?

There is (obviously) a large investment in entered data - I don't like relying on an ISP to preserve that.

Thanks,

If you do not trust your host to provide backups and reliable service, why are you with them?

You can always make your own copies of your mivadata directories and Merchant2 directories store them locally.

However, with a reliable hosting company, you shouldnt need to do this.

Hey, I wear suspenders _and_ a belt :-)

Actually, I am just trying to be careful. My old days as an IT guy with audited systems required that we have a plan in place - that included the ability to rebuild the system at another location when the primary location has been removed from the map. Then, should disaster strike, you can set up elsewhere and be back up in short time. We'd even test it annually and make sure it worked (never did, we always learned something). So, I'd like to have a periodic local copy of the store.

Do I need all the directories under Merchant to capture the configuration or is the data/configuration stored in particular directories ? If I have a fresh install (same version) of MIVA would it be possible to simply copy/overwrite all the old files into the appropriate locations or will I need some consulting time from a guru to make it happen ?

You need ALL the folders and files under your data directory and yes, all the files and folders under Merchant2 also - unless you have absolutely no other modules installed. Then you could just do a plain re-install and upload your datafiles only.

I disagree. Even if your host is reliable and trustworthy, it's always wise to also be cautious and run backups to local disks as well (securely, of course). Anything can happen, and having both is just good business.
