When to use maintenance mode

When is it necessary to put the store in maintenance mode?
We typically use "one click basket cleanup" and openmaintenance pack without putting the store in maintenance mode without problem.

Just because you haven't had a problem, does not mean you might not wind up with one sooner or later :)

Its best to put the store in maintenance mode anytime you are modifying databases, especially when deleting things.

We don't want problems. We have it set up for someone in the office to do this routinely along with some other tasks (rebuilding the database for the quick links and search manager). I am reluctant to take the site down daily. Are there some guidelines as to when this is necessary?

It should only be a for 10 mins or so....no need to rebuild the CBS module databases.

If you dont mind spending the money, you can always invest in Truxof's MMTicker module (http://tinyurl.com/rfyyh) which you can automate the store close, deleting of expired baskets and packing, and re-opening the store.
