Customer Login Problems / Can I use Cookies?

We are having a problem with returning customers remembering their login in the checkout/shopping cart. I watch them in ELM trying to login over and over. Can Miva drop cookies on their computer, so that they are automatically logged in? I see the functionallity on many sites.
