My product line is such that at times I run out of an item even though it has been sold and paid for by a customer. These items are on the order of a buck a piece so it's not a huge amount of money. Is there a way I can credit a customer?s account via admin so a credit forward would be available to the customer next time he or she checks out a basket. I now send a check which is a pain in the tush

Copernicus' CustomerCredit (http://www.mivacentral.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=m&Product_Code=CBS-CUSTCREDIT&ref=WPAW) module allows you to do this.
However, be aware MIVAs support for Copernicus' modules since they took over, is poor at best.

You could also use the Gift Certificate Module, which can server two purposes. Many sites use this module to handle store credits:
