Gift Card Text at Checkout

I have a client who wants to be able to input gift card text for each item at the beginning of the checkout process. I realize that collecting gift card text can easily be done on the product page using product attributes. However, my client doesn't want people to have to input the information that soon. Is there a module or a way that would allow asking about gift card later on during the checkout process?

The closest you'll probably get is Addendum (http://www.mivacentral.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?store_code=m&screen=PROD&product_code=WCW-ADDENDUM5) but it's not going to be able to produce a seperate box for each product; you'd need some custom programming to do that other than at the product level.

This might be a good time to practice that time honored tradition of telling the client they might be wrong. Frankly, the best place for a "gift message" is at the product level. Otherwise, how would one order 2 FooBears and give one to Jimmy...and one to Jane. Merchant is going to put them on a line that says, 'here is two FooBears' you fight over them<G>.

Its not only the easiest way...is probably the best way.

Thanks for the quick responses. I think doing the gift card text at the product level is the best thing to do too but the client might be pickier than that.
