Shipping specifications for hard vs soft goods?

As noted before, I inherited a system that someone else made and am trying to iron out some wrinkles.

We sell both hard and soft goods (PDF downloads). Our store is set up so the purchaser has to choose what type of shipping he or she prefers, and the list includes "PDFs only" (no shipping charges).

Often times the buyers will also choose "PDF only" for a hard good and we have to follow up for shipping, etc etc.

Also, for some reason, there's a glitch where the customer can process the order without having specified any type of shipping at all "You must choose a shipping method" is the first option on the checkout list.

Is it possible to specify the shipping setup so "PDF only" is only an option when the buyer has only chosen PDF issues? I would also like to eliminate the problem where no shipping method is an option as well.

What shipping module are you currently using to calculate shipping?

You can set the security so that shipping calculation is required.

From what I can tell, it sounds like the Copernicus Shipping SuperMod will work for you.

These are the shipping modules we have installed. I'm not too sure which are the ones being used regularly and I haven't gone in and attempted to configure them further (I assume that the person who set up the system did some exploration on resolving this issue):

All of those with the exception of Weilands baseunit shipping module, are preinstalled and included with the Merchant 4.x bundle.

As Julie mentioned below, you can use the CBS SuperShipping Module (http://tinyurl.com/gc9e6) to restrict which methods appear based on what products are in the basket.
