Today I have to move our store from Miva 4.23 to a new host which has Miva 5 installed on it. Is there a trick to moving easily without having to pay a bunch of money for the host to do it?

Thank you for any advice.

Yes, move to a host who specializes in Miva Merchant like wolfpaw (http://www.wpcomp.com) and hostasaurus (http://www.hostasaurus.com). They transfer stores for free. Talk to them about your need to move a 4.23 store over but wanting to upgrade immediately to v5.

I didn't choose which host was decided....

So I have to work with what I have got. I need to try and figure this out on my own but I'm not really sure where to start.

Thank you for your advice though. Those are two really great hosting services. Same with dotCom.

Hmm, I would assume that some hosts may do this for you...but,

Go here:

http://smallbusiness.miva.com/support/downloads/

Scroll down to the topic:

Upgrade MIVA Merchant 4 to MIVA Merchant 5

Click the link to expose the Download Link and Instructions Link...

Pretty straight forward, but do read the instructions carefully.

A few hints cause i don't remember seeing this information.

When you log into your merchant 5 store after uploading the provide.xml file, do not use Mozilla/Firefox (unconfirmed, but it produced occasional JS errors)

You can repeat the process by logging out, and then renaming the provide.bunchofnumbers.xml back to provide.xml

If things don't look right...check the provide.log file for clues..

and follow the directions....

Moving from v4 to v5 stores is quite straightforward and can be done quickly, the only trick will be migrating the store look and feel if you have OpenUI and/or other 3rd party modules in your v4.23 store. If not - the process can be done literally in under 1 hour. If you do have OpenUI and other 3rd party modules that affect the look and feel of your v4 store, you'll have to pretty much redo all your store customizations in v5 from scratch.

Your new host should be able to transfer your site for you (we do) and assist you with the upgrade, or maybe do the upgrade for you, too. Redoing the look and feel may take a while though so you may have to do that on your own or outsource that to a developer familiar with v5 who can do this quickly.

Thank you all for your awesome advice.

I am tackling this and have hit a road block. My host helpers can't help unless I pay then to talk to a miva specialist.

I downloaded the upgrade.mvc from the miva site. Then I uploaded it into our current Miva 4.23 store. Then I went to the export to miva 5 link and it did the exporting check mark process.

The directions now say to find it in the store data directory for your MIVA merchant 4 store. There will be an export folder such as data\merchant2\00000001\export. In that directory locate the file provide.xml. Copy this file to your Miva Merchant 5 root data directory.

I am using dreamweaver as my ftp and have found a folder called mivadata > Merchant2 > 00000001 > export
but there are only a bunch of "orders010306.dat" but with different numbers. I am not finding the provide.xml.

Do you think Miva saves it somewhere else?

I thank you in advance for any advice you can give.

The export file is in your mivadata/Merchant2/0000001/export directory, which is not a publically accessible directory (ie: not the same as the public Merchant2 directlry you see through Dreamweaver). You'll need to use a real FTP program that can give you access to directories above the public html folder, or reconfigure Dreamweaver to FTP to those directories (though a stand-alone FTP program is a much better option).

The fact he can see Orders.Date.dat makes me wonder if he indeed is in the right directory....look again (hit refresh) for provide.xml... if that don't work, try Remik's suggestion and use a standalone FTP client.

It worked. Once you mentioned that It should be in that folder, if occured to me that I was using my own login and I needed to get the access from the administrator. I was able to find it. :)

Now my deal is that the directions say that when you log into the Miva 5 it should detect the provide.xml file and automatically import the store. It automatically detected it and I waited while it did it's thing but it didn't seem like it created a store. So I went to add a store and set that up...but I think I am wrong. How do I get Miva 5 to import the files from Miva 4?

I saved the provide.xml in the folder that has both the Merchant2 and Merchant5 folders.

So confused

what does the provide.log say....it should be where the renamed provide.xml file is...

It won't let me open it. Says that I don't have a valid editor for this file extension

Open it with notepad. Any text editor will do.

and then it just keep continuing with the fatal error message. What does this mean?

At the top of your provide.xml file you need to replace OPENUI with mmui and then it will run through correctly.
