Is attribute level inventory tracking EXPECTED to be implemented by Miva 5.5 or is there a module we can use?

Inventory Manager from VikingCoders.com will allow you to track inventory of attributes.

I heard that 5.5 was supposed to do this without a module... is this a feature they're working on?

I don't know if that is going to be a feature, I know attribute weights are now support with Merchant 5 which is new.

After Core 14 (the next bug fix release) it's the next feature to be released. I should caution though, this is an extensive feature addition (anytime you're changing database API's we need to move carefully) so it will be out sometime this quarter and will probably be in beta in August.

One Page Checkout, Order Status and Order History are all following Inventory at the Attribute Level. Due to the beta process you may very well see all of these released officially in late August.
