I am designing a site for a film equipment manufacturer with about 1000 items (mostly accessories) Do most people charge by the number of items on a site? I've done many smaller sites where I could charge by the number of pages, banners, flash movies, etc. Thank you!

The amount of product doesn't necessarily require the bulk of the time in building a store. Take into consideration the time to design the look and feel, apply it to the page templates, installing numerous 3rd party modules and their expense, etc. Any of those things can impact the overall time of a project. The best advice, go build one for yourself and keep track of the time, then use that as your base and add new client requests for additional functionality accordingly. Just my opinion.

I would add, keep track of your time, then multiply that by three to account for all of the things you didn't do/think of the first time around :)
Things like spending 18 hours answering 600 customer emails on a $600 template upgrade?
