hi there, just a general question, how long will threads be kept around? and if they're moved when they get "too old," will they be moved to an archive section so we can still search there?

At this point there are no plans to "prune" the forums. Certain threads might be collected into a "Look here for your answers first" type thread, but we will not remove old threads or posts. At some point in the future, we may create an archive forum to act as a repository for those helpful and good threads.
Thanks!

Typically, boards do not really remove old posts (though they certainly can), but can cut off the age when displaying. In vBulletin >> User Control Panel >> Options (http://extranet.miva.com/forums/profile.php?do=editoptions) >> Default Thread Age Cut Off, you can set the expiry as you wish. As well you can do it individually in each forum - at the bottom, change the dropdown box in Display Options.
